About the project
What this is
The original host is gone, so the way the client talks to it had to be worked out from the client itself, a byte at a time. From that came a new server. The original DOS client runs unchanged and connects to it as it once connected to AOL.
It works on real hardware too: a physical 486 with a WiFi modem plays on the realm today.
What you can do there
- Walk the realm with other players: the areas, parties and the full combat system of the game.
- Visit The Adventurers' Hall after signing on: letters between players, the Wayward Blade tavern for chat, message boards, guilds, a Hall of Fame and the News of the Realm.
- Stay in touch with your guild wherever you are. Guild chat reaches you in the Hall and out in the game, and from the tavern you can speak to your guild alone without the whole room hearing.
- Look in on the realm from any browser: the Realm status page shows whether it is open, who is out adventuring, the Hall of Fame, the guilds and the latest news.
- Hear Lord Nasher's briefing, re-created as on AOL: one current quest for everyone. After it come the revival's own extras: his thanks for areas you have mastered and where your story leads next.
The Technical page lists exactly what works, what was re-created and what is still missing.
Thanks
- Great Hierophant, for beta testing on real hardware, including his Tandy 1000.
- Cloudschatze, for the dial-up node that lets a real modem call the realm.
Thanks also to the sources listed on the Technical page.
